What is the difference between sport performance psychology and mental health psychology?

While there is some overlap, sport psychology and mental health psychology are two separate disciplines. People can utilize sport and performance psychology to maximize their performance from good to great. Mental health services may be provided when someone is struggling with something specific that is affecting their regular functioning. Sometimes your mental health may impact your sport performance, causing you to not perform well in response to struggling with mental health. The opposite can also be true, that positive or negative sport performance may impact your mental health. If you are unsure about which services may be the right fit for you, reach out to our team for further guidance.

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

It's understandable to feel hesitant about opening up, especially when you're used to handling things on your own. But think of it this way: as an athlete, you know that seeking out coaching, training, and expert advice is how you get better, stronger, and more resilient. Therapy is no different. It's not about weakness--it's about strengthening your mental game, just like you would your physical game. Working with a therapist is like having a coach for your mind to help you overcome obstacles, stay focused, and feel your best. The strongest people are the ones who use every tool available to them, and therapy is one of the most powerful tools there is.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or teammate?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy and mental skills coaching are completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” With us you have a safe place to face these challenges with professional support.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling, nutrition, and performance coaching to address mental and physical problems. At Trifecta we take a holistic approach to your health and wellbeing.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for services, it will be different depending on the individual. We tailor our approach to your specific needs.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time services can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek services in the first place. For some people it may be one or a few sessions, for others it may be a longer term commitment.

How do I know if I qualify for my services to be covered by insurance?

Our mental health services may be covered by insurance. Our clinicians are in network with most major insurance companies, but varies for each individual clinician and insurance plan. It is best to check with your clinician and insurance provider before starting services to confirm coverage. You may be eligible for insurance reimbursement for nutrition services depending on your insurance plan. Mental performance sessions are not eligible for insurance coverage.

Are there other options for payment?

At Trifecta our mental health services are in network with insurance. Private pay and sliding scale options are available. All other services are priced based on the nature of the service and vary depending on package selection or number of sessions.

What insurances do you accept?

Trifecta as a part of Summer Counseling currently accepts the following insurance plans:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Cigna
  • HealthPartners
  • Medicaid/Minnesota Medical Assistance

Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services.

Does it matter where I am located?

Sports nutrition services and mental performance coaching services can be completed in person or virtually from anywhere in the country. Our mental health therapists are licensed or supervised to practice in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona at this time.

What is the cost per service?

Our individual sessions are prices at $175 per hour and start at $200 for more than one person. Nutrition services vary dependent on your needs. See more on the Well Fed Athlete program here.

Can I do multiple services at once?

Yes! Our work is done best as a team!

Can Trifecta work with teams?
